SQL Server Migration Assistant for Access
Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant (aka SSMA) for Access is a tool for
migrating databases from Microsoft Access to Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
SQL Server Migration Assistant for Access (SSMA) for Access converts Access
database objects to SQL Server database objects in its workspace then loads
those converted objects into SQL Server 2005 and then SSMA can also migrate data
from MS Access to MS SQL Server 2005.
Supported versions of MS Access as source database by the SSMA for Access are
version of Microsoft Access 97 and later versions including Access 2003
databases. And as target database SSMA supports Microsoft SQL Server 2005 aka
Yukon.
SSMA for Access offers a wide range of features like network scanning,
conversion assessment reports, script generation, type mapping, etc.
SSMA for Access handles problems successfully that the Office Upsizing Wizard
can not handle correctly.
SQL Server Migration Tool for Access runs on Windows 2000, Windows Server
2003 SP1 and Windows XP SP2 operating systems.
You can download the Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant for Access from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D842F8B4-C914-4AC7-B2F3-D25FFF4E24FB
Requirements issued for SSMA tool can be listed as below:
Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 or a later version. Check the web page
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&displaylang=en
from Microsoft Downloads site for MS Windows Installer 3.1
The Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or a later version. The .NET Framework 2.0 is
available on the SQL Server 2005 product disc, and from the
Developer Center Web site.
The Microsoft J# Version 2.0 Redistributable Package which can be downloaded
from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=f72c74b3-ed0e-4af8-ae63-2f0e42501be1&displaylang=en
The memory of the computer which the SSMA is installed should be at least 1
GB RAM in order to run successfully.
The SMMA running computer should be able to access and connect to the
computer that hosts the target instance of SQL Server 2005.
One important note stated on the readme's and documents of the SSMA is the
limitation in the target database name definition but it seems to be a trivial
problem unless to have to face it. The limitation is about using the space
character in the database name. You can not migrate an Access database to a SQL
Server 2005 database whose name contains spaces. As an example you can not
migrate an Access database to a SQL Server database named i.e. "Customer
Services" but you can if the target SQL Server database name is changed to "Customer_Services"
Installation of the SSMA for Access is straight forward if you complete the
requirements. Default installation location for SMMA is C:\Program Files\Microsoft
